Do QR codes expire?

Published 18 July 2026 · 4 min read

It’s the most common QR question — and the answer is “it depends on the type.” Here’s exactly when a QR code lasts forever and when it can stop working.

The short answer

A static QR code never expires. The data — your link, text or Wi-Fi details — is encoded directly into the black-and-white pattern. Nothing is hosted on a server, so there is nothing to lapse. It will scan in ten years exactly as it does today.

So why do people say QR codes expire?

Because dynamic QR codes can. A dynamic code doesn’t contain your link — it contains a short URL that redirects through the provider’s server to your real destination. That’s useful (you can edit the destination and see scan stats), but it only works while you keep paying for the service. Stop paying, and the redirect dies — so the code appears to “expire.”

The “free trial” trap

Many tools advertise a free QR code, quietly generate a dynamic one, and then expire it after 7–14 days unless you subscribe. The code you printed suddenly leads nowhere. This is the single most common complaint about QR generators — and it’s avoidable.

How to make a code that never expires

Use a generator that makes static codes, like QRcodeUniverse. Because the data lives in the pattern itself, the code is permanent, works offline, and costs nothing. The trade-off: you can’t edit the destination after printing, and there are no built-in scan analytics. For most uses — menus, business cards, Wi-Fi, links, events — that trade-off is well worth permanence. Read more in static vs dynamic QR codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do static QR codes ever stop working?

The code itself never expires. It only “stops working” if the destination it points to goes offline — for example, if the web page it links to is taken down. The QR pattern is permanent.

Can I make a dynamic code that never expires?

Only while you keep paying the provider that hosts the redirect. If the service or plan ends, the redirect stops. Static codes avoid this entirely.

Does QRcodeUniverse expire codes?

No. We only create static codes, which never expire, with no account and no watermark.
