What is a QR code and how does it work?
QR codes are everywhere — on menus, posters, packages and payment terminals. But what actually happens when you point your phone at one? Here’s a plain-English explanation.
The short version
A QR code (short for “Quick Response” code) is a two-dimensional barcode: a grid of black and white squares that stores information. Where a traditional barcode holds a handful of digits in a single row, a QR code packs data in two directions — across and down — letting it store thousands of characters in a small square.
When you scan one with a phone camera, the device reads that pattern, decodes the information inside, and acts on it — usually by opening a website, joining a Wi-Fi network, or saving a contact.
How the pattern is read
Every QR code contains a few landmarks that make it fast and reliable to scan:
- Finder patterns — the three large squares in the corners. They tell a scanner “this is a QR code” and which way up it is, so you can scan from almost any angle.
- Alignment & timing patterns — smaller markers that help the scanner correct for distortion when the code is curved or photographed at an angle.
- Data modules — the field of smaller squares that actually encode your information as binary ones and zeros.
The camera app finds the corner squares, maps the grid, reads the modules, and converts them back into text. All of this happens in a fraction of a second.
Error correction: why a logo doesn’t break it
One of the cleverest parts of the QR standard is built-in error correction. Extra redundant data is woven into the code so that even if part of it is dirty, damaged or covered — say, by a logo in the middle — the scanner can still reconstruct the original message. There are four levels (Low, Medium, Quartile and High) that recover roughly 7%, 15%, 25% and 30% of the code respectively. That’s exactly why, when you add a center logo in a generator, it’s wise to raise error correction to High.
What can a QR code store?
Far more than just website links. Common types include:
- URL — open any web page.
- Wi-Fi — join a network automatically, no password typing.
- vCard — save a full contact card in one tap.
- Email, SMS & phone — start a pre-filled message or call.
- Calendar events, geolocation, and even crypto payment addresses.

Do QR codes expire?
A plain, or static, QR code never expires — the data is baked directly into the pattern, so it works forever with no hosting. A brief history
QR codes were invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave to track automotive parts. Their ability to be scanned quickly and hold lots of data made them useful far beyond factories. When smartphone cameras began reading them natively, QR codes became a mainstream bridge between the physical and digital worlds.
